Journey
Mbuso Tulwana, professionally celebrated as DJ Mbuso, stands as one of the most influential figures in the evolution of South African electronic music. Growing up in the vibrant streets of Soweto, Mbuso’s journey from a grassroots mixtape producer to an industry mogul is a testament to his vision and timing. He first captured national attention by winning the prestigious 1999 "Camel Vinyl Experience," a victory that signaled his arrival as a master technician.
His career reached new heights through his tenure at Y-FM, where his weekend sets became essential listening for a generation. However, his most enduring legacy is the co-founding of Soul Candi. What began as a small vinyl shop in Rosebank transformed into a cultural powerhouse that democratized house music through mass-market compilations and DJ education. Mbuso was the creative face of the very first Soul Candi Session, an album that remains a blueprint for the genre.
In pursuit of a more personalized artistic direction, Mbuso later established Phezulu Records, focusing on original productions like the critically acclaimed Shades of Maf & So. His ability to fuse sophisticated international house structures with the raw, energetic pulse of the township defined the "Soweto Funk" sub-genre. Today, he continues to be a revered elder statesman of the decks, respected for his authenticity, his mentorship of younger artists, and his unwavering commitment to the soul of South African house.
